What should a man do who is trying to divorce his wife, who insults him in front of her family, obeys her mother over him, acts arrogantly towards him because she owns the apartment, and he has a young daughter with her?

The Shari'ah has given the husband authority over his wife, and has obligated her to obey him in what is good and lawful. Her obedience to him takes precedence over her obedience to her parents when there is a conflict. A wife's strong personality is not demonstrated by humiliating her husband or rebelling against him, but rather by knowing his rights and fulfilling them. If a wife humiliates her husband and acts arrogantly towards him, she is disobedient (عاصية) and rebellious (ناشز). The husband should be patient with her and follow the Shari'ah-prescribed steps to remedy her rebellion. He should not resort to divorce unless there is a clear overriding benefit in it, due to its negative consequences, especially on the children.
