What is idle talk (laghw)? And what is the religious ruling concerning it? May Allah reward you.
"Laghw" (idle talk/frivolity) is applied to speech that has no benefit and has not reached the degree of sin. It is also applied to all falsehood, thus including polytheism (shirk) and sins. The Lawgiver has encouraged abandoning it and turning away from it. Allah Almighty said: "And those who turn away from Al-Laghw (frivolous things)." Ibn Kathir interpreted it as encompassing all falsehood, including polytheism and sins, as well as any words and deeds that are of no benefit. It is also mentioned in the descriptions of the Servants of the Most Merciful that "And when they pass by Al-Laghw (vain, ill speech or evil play), they pass by it with dignity." "Laghw" is also applied to "Laghw Al-Yamin" (unintentional oath), for which Allah does not hold one accountable.
