What is the interpretation of the noble verse: "And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to mislead from the path of Allah without knowledge and takes it as ridicule. For such there will be a humiliating punishment" in Surat Luqman?

Ibn Kathir reported from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that "idle talk" refers to singing, and this was also narrated from Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Ikrimah, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid, Mak'hul, and others. It was reported from Al-Dahhak and Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam that idle talk refers to Shirk (polytheism). Ibn Jarir chose the opinion that "idle talk" is any speech that diverts from the verses of Allah and following His path, and this is the correct view. For Allah threatens those who purchase or strive for any speech by which they divert others from the verses of Allah and following His path, and this includes Shirk, singing, and other things.
