How do we respond to someone who argues, citing Allah’s saying: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Dhikr (the Qur’an) and indeed, We will be its guardian," to deny the distortion of the Torah and the Gospel, and by claiming that Christians and Jews are "People of the Dhikr" based on Allah’s saying: "So ask the People of the Dhikr if you do not know"?

The Qur’an states that some of the People of the Book distorted their scriptures, as in His (Allah’s) saying: "Do you then hope that they would believe in you, though a party of them used to hear the Word of Allah and then distort it knowingly after they understood it?" and His saying: "Among those who are Jews, there are some who distort the words from their [true] meanings." What he used as an argument is false, because the word "dhikr" (remembrance/message) has been mentioned in the Qur’an with several meanings, and what is meant by His (Allah’s) saying: "Indeed, it is We who sent down the Dhikr (Qur’an) and indeed, We will be its guardian" is the Qur’an, and the exegetes have unanimously agreed upon this.
