What is the ruling on purchasing a second receiver to watch Islamic channels? Is this considered a charity, and is it permissible to go against one's mother's opinion in this regard?

If you are in urgent need of marriage, or your mother has commanded you to marry, and purchasing the device will hinder you from marriage, then refraining from buying it may be obligatory, because that without which an obligation cannot be fulfilled is itself obligatory. Some scholars have gone to the extent of saying that obedience to parents is obligatory if they command marriage, such as Imam Ahmad, who said: "If he has two parents who command him to marry, I would command him to marry." However, if the device does not hinder you from marriage, then your mother has no right to prevent you from it, especially if it is beneficial for the afterlife, but obeying her is preferable. And if you buy it while gently refusing her command and reminding her that sustenance is in the hand of Allah, then there is no blame upon you. And if you limit the device to beneficial programs and make them available for listening, then you will have the reward of charity.
