There are two types of breaking the fast in Ramadan: 1. That which necessitates making up the fast (qadaa') and expiation (kaffarah): This is sexual intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan. 2. That which necessitates only making up the fast (qadaa'): This includes all other fast-breaking acts apart from sexual intercourse.

Making up the fast (qadaa') means fasting the number of days a Muslim missed in Ramadan, whether with a valid excuse or without one. It must be performed before the onset of the next Ramadan. Whoever delays making up the fast without a valid excuse until the next Ramadan arrives must make up the fast along with paying expiation for the delay. There is an opinion among some scholars that obligates expiation upon one who intentionally breaks their fast by eating, drinking, masturbating, or revoking the intention to fast during the daytime. This is the view of the Maliki school, differing from the majority of scholars who limit the obligation of expiation to sexual intercourse only.
