Breaking the fast by intentional sexual intercourse during the day in Ramadan, while knowing its prohibition, necessitates the major expiation (kaffarah kubra). However, if the fast is broken intentionally by means other than sexual intercourse, such as eating or drinking, some scholars, like the Hanafis and Malikis, also hold that expiation is obligatory. They argue that whoever intentionally breaks the fast has violated the sanctity of the fast, and that the Quranic text prohibiting breaking the fast during the day in Ramadan encompasses all means of breaking the fast. In contrast, the Shafi'is hold that expiation is only obligatory for sexual intercourse.
