The minimum obligatory shroud is a single garment that covers the entire body. This is the view of Abu Hanifa and Ahmad, and one of the two opinions among the Malikis. They cited as evidence what was narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Khabbab ibn al-Aratt, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding the story of Mus'ab ibn Umayr, may Allah be pleased with him, for whom they could not find anything to shroud him with except a namirah (a striped garment). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then commanded that his head be covered and that idhkhir (a type of aromatic grass) be placed on his legs. So, if there is not enough to cover the entire deceased, the head and the longest part of the body should be covered with what is available, and some grass should be placed on the remaining exposed parts.
