The question

Is it permissible for a woman to accept her husband's marriage to another woman as expiation for her sin, or should she try to convince him of the possibility of this procedure succeeding this time, knowing that the husband has already proposed to a girl and she knows he is infertile, and that her previous suitor is still pursuing her?

The answer

The wife did well by patiently enduring her husband's inability to have children, but she erred by leaving the house and seeking divorce due to problems with her husband's family. She should have contained these problems with wisdom and patience. The wife committed a grave sin by engaging in an illicit relationship with the suitor, who is a stranger to her as long as no marriage contract has been concluded. She then followed this with the sin of abortion after forty days.

She must perform sincere repentance by severing all ties with the suitor, removing his attachment from her heart, feeling remorse, resolving never to return to such a sin, and increasing good deeds. Her husband's marriage to a second wife is permissible if he is capable and just, and her consent is not expiation for what she did; rather, expiation comes through sincere repentance. She should not cut ties with her family despite their wrongdoing, for Allah has commanded maintaining kinship ties.
