What is meant by Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen's prohibition of the niqab, and how does a woman cover herself and what does she wear according to this statement?
Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen clarified that the niqab was known during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and women used to wear it. However, he does not issue a permitting it at the present time, and he views its prohibition because it is a means to expand into what is impermissible, especially in conservative societies, where women tend to overly expose their eyes. He calls for covering the entire face without revealing the eyes.
In contrast, we issue a fatwa that there is no harm for a woman to wear the niqab from which only the eyes appear, while being cautious not to excessively expose large parts of the eye sockets or cheeks, as this is considered forbidden adornment (tabarruj).
Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen himself indicated that he does not prohibit wearing the legitimate niqab from which only the eyes appear for the purpose of seeing.
