Is the Hadith: "Whoever swears an oath, believe him," authentic?
There is no musnad (attested with a chain of transmission) attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording mentioned: "If you swear, then be truthful; and if you are sworn to, then believe." However, it has been reported by some writers without attribution. The command to believe the one who swears an oath is found in what Ibn Majah narrated, and Al-Albani graded as (good), from Ibn Umar, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not swear by your fathers. Whoever swears by Allah, let him be truthful. Whoever has an oath sworn to him by Allah, let him be pleased. And whoever is not pleased with Allah, he is not from Allah." Some scholars have interpreted "fulfilling the oath-taker's request" (ibrar al-muqsim), mentioned concerning a Muslim's right over another Muslim, as believing the oath-taker in what he has reported.
