Is it considered a sin to distance oneself from a father who is controlled by his wife, and she prevents his daughters from communicating with him? And what is the ruling of Islamic law on that?
The father's right over his child is great, and his right to dutifulness and kindness does not fall even if he commits wrongdoing, nor is it permissible to sever ties with him. Therefore, it is not permissible for you to cut off your father because he stopped asking about you or because of his wife's misconduct. It is obligatory for you to honor him and show kindness to him by calling him, visiting him, and other forms of dutifulness you are able to perform, as long as no harm befalls you. For honoring parents includes delivering all possible good and warding off all possible evil. Honoring parents is among the greatest causes of Allah's pleasure and entry into Paradise. Maintaining ties with the stepmother is not obligatory, but obedience to the father is obligatory if he commands you to visit or speak with her, as long as no harm befalls you.
