What are the obligatory and recommended acts after the death of a father? Is the Udhiyah (sacrifice) obligatory for him? What is the ruling on including a living mother with him in the Udhiyah? Scholars differed regarding the ruling on offering a sacrifice (Uḍḥiyah) on behalf of the deceased. The Hanafis and Hanbalis held that it is permissible and that its reward reaches the deceased. The Shafi'is, however, maintained that it is not permissible unless there was a will from the deceased. As for the Malikis, they disliked offering a sacrifice on behalf of the deceased. It is permissible to offer an independent sacrifice with the intention that its reward be for the deceased, or to include the deceased in the reward of a living person's sacrifice. This is considered an act of righteousness and benevolence. A sacrifice is valid whether it is a male or female of the An'am (grazing livestock), provided that the recognized conditions are met and it is free from disqualifying defects.
