Is a wife considered forbidden to her husband if he said to her: "If you meet your cousin's son in the street and speak to him, you are forbidden to me," and then it happened that the wife's sister called her cousin's son to help them carry a refrigerator, and the wife spoke to him, knowing that the husband's intention when taking the oath was for the wife to fear him and never speak to her cousin's son?
The preponderant opinion regarding one who declares his wife unlawful is that his ruling depends on the husband's intention: if he intended ẓihār, then it is ẓihār; if he intended divorce, then it is divorce; and if he intended an oath, then it becomes an oath.
Accordingly, if your intention was merely to threaten, without intending divorce, then your words are considered an oath, and you must offer expiation for breaking it. This expiation is feeding ten needy persons, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If you cannot find any of these, then you must fast for three days.
We urge you to fear Allah and be cautious about uttering such words.
