The answer

Most scholars hold that the first taslima (salutation) in prayer is obligatory, while the second is sunnah (recommended). Accordingly, the prayer of a latecomer (masbuq) is not invalidated if he stands up to complete what he missed before the imam's second taslima. This differs from the Hanbali school of thought, which deems both taslimas obligatory and considers the masbuq's fard (obligatory) prayer invalid if he stands up before the second taslima and does not return. It is, however, recommended for the masbuq to wait until the second taslima to avoid scholarly differences.
