What is the ruling regarding the prayer of a congregant who stands up before the Imam begins the second Tasleem, and what is required of him?

The jurists differed regarding the ruling on the second Tasleem (salutation). The majority held it to be recommended, while the Hanbalis considered it obligatory and a pillar (rukn) in the obligatory prayer. Thus, if a latecomer (masbuq) stands up before his imam's second Tasleem, according to the Hanbali view, he must return to perform the Tasleem with his imam. Otherwise, his prayer as an obligatory one becomes invalid and turns into a supererogatory (nafl) prayer. As for the view of the majority, there is no harm if the latecomer stands up before the second Tasleem.
