Is it permissible to recite the Quran in the bathroom (without taking the Mus'haf inside)?

The Noble Qur’an is the word of Allah, and there are many etiquettes to observe when reciting it, including the cleanliness of the place. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on reciting the Qur’an in the bathroom. The Shafi’is held that it is not disliked, and this view was narrated from Ibrahim al-Nakha’i, Malik, and Ata’. Others, including Ali ibn Abi Talib and a group of Tabi’in and Abu Hanifa, held that it is disliked. As for Sheikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, he was of the view that it is not appropriate to mention Allah Almighty verbally inside the bathroom, but if one mentions Him in the heart, there is no harm, and it is recommended to wait until exiting it. As for the place of ablution outside the area designated for answering the call of nature, there is no harm in it.
