What is the ruling on reciting the supplication: "O Allah, I ask You by Yuqilim Shunahil Bashharin; I ask You by the sanctity of Kashhil Bardim Bhra'il Ajjajil Azzasil; and I ask You by the sanctity of Jibreel, Mika'il, Israfeel, Azra'il; and by the sanctity of our Master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace"? And does it lead to major shirk?

We have no knowledge of the names mentioned before Jibreel. Scholars have prohibited supplicating with names whose meanings are unknown in the Arabic language. As for asking Allah Almighty by the sanctity of Jibreel or any other angel, or by the sanctity of the prophets, it is a form of tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah) that is forbidden by Islamic law. It is permissible to seek nearness to Allah by His names and attributes, or by righteous deeds, or by asking a righteous servant to supplicate for one. The aforementioned supplication is not permissible because it includes seeking nearness through unknown names and through an innovated form of tawassul, which is considered a means to shirk (polytheism), though it is not shirk itself.
