Is it permissible to decorate a tree with lights, similar to a Christmas tree, for home decoration without celebrating any Christian holiday or imitating them?
There is no harm in decorating trees with electric lights, provided there is no extravagance, because the default ruling for things is permissibility, as indicated by the noble verses such as His saying, the Almighty: (He is the One Who created for you all that is on earth) and His saying: (Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good things of provision?"). And "the default ruling for objects and benefits is permissibility and lawfulness, unless there is evidence to prove their prohibition."
However, it is not permissible to decorate trees during Christmas, or if the decorated tree resembles a Christmas tree in its specific form, even if the intention is not imitation. This is to prevent imitation of disbelievers. It is preferable to abandon this and decorate the house with other ornaments that have no suspicion.
