What is the ruling on one who takes zakat when they are not among its rightful recipients, and what is their punishment on the Day of Resurrection?
It is not permissible to take money except for those who are entitled to it. Therefore, whoever takes it while not being entitled to it has committed a grave sin by withholding the right of the poor and consuming wealth unlawfully. Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly" and "And whoever does that in aggression and injustice - then We will drive him into a Fire" and "Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire." The supplication of one who consumes unlawful wealth is not answered, and "Every flesh that grew from unlawful gain, the Fire is more deserving of it." Whoever commits this sin must repent and dispose of the money by giving it to its rightful recipients.
