What is the ruling on shortening the beard, and does its length not matter as much as caring for it and cleaning it?

The prophetic Sunnah (definition), both verbal and practical, indicates the obligation to let the beard grow and not to trim it. Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Be different from the polytheists, let the beards grow full, and trim the moustaches." "Let the beards grow full" means leaving them abundant. Al-Nawawi mentioned that the meaning of the five narrations of the hadith (definition) is to leave the beard as it is, and this is the preferred opinion. Likewise, the Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas stated that trimming the beard is not permissible because it contradicts the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Ibn Uthaymeen and Ibn Baz concurred with them, with Ibn Baz emphasizing the invalidity of hadiths that permit trimming the beard. Therefore, what is required of a Muslim is to let the beard grow and not to trim it, while taking care to keep it clean.
