Is the mother obligated to adhere to the father's will regarding his daughter not marrying a specific young man, despite the father's approval in a dream and the girl's desire to marry?

The preponderant opinion is that the relevant compatibility (kafa'ah) in marriage lies in religious commitment and character. If a compatible suitor proposes to a woman, her guardian is not permitted to prevent her from marrying him for reasons not recognized by Islamic law. It is feared that such an act might be considered 'adl (unjust prevention of marriage), which is forbidden. The father's will not to marry her to a compatible suitor is not binding, and the mother does not sin by disobeying this will. If the guardian insists on preventing the marriage, the matter can be raised with Islamic centers to arrange her marriage, for "the ruler is the guardian of her who has no guardian."
