If a father prevents his daughter from marrying a suitable (kufu’) man, he is considered to be "a'ḍil" (unjustly preventing), and his guardianship (wilayah) is forfeited and transfers to the next in line. The matter can also be taken to court. "A'ḍl" occurs if a mature, sane woman requests to marry a suitable man and the guardian refuses, even if the reason is a low dowry. The guardian's refusal is not considered "a'ḍl" if she requests to marry a man who is not suitable.
