Is maintaining kinship ties obligatory for a woman, or is it better for her to remain in her home, especially if her relatives are given to backbiting, slandering, and envy? And who are the relatives with whom ties must be maintained according to their degree of kinship? And is it obligatory to sit with female relatives if their gatherings are filled with backbiting and slander, or is it better to avoid such gatherings for fear of falling into sin?
Allah has commanded the joining of kin ( silat al-arham) and forbidden their severance. This includes everything Allah has commanded to be joined, such as faith in Him and His Messenger, and obedience to Him. It also includes joining with parents, relatives, and spouses. Allah has associated the severance of kin with corruption on earth. Joining kin increases sustenance and life, and it is obligatory upon both men and women. A woman may go out to join obligatory kin with lawful Islamic controls, and joining kin does not necessarily require going out; rather, it can be done through communication and the like. The lowest degree of joining is to abandon abandonment and to greet. The kin whose joining is obligatory are, according to the preponderant opinion, all those with whom marriage is forbidden (mahram). It is obligatory to advise kin who commit sins, and to leave their gatherings if they persist in sin. It is permissible to abandon them if there is fear of temptation for one's religion.
