How can one differentiate between love for the sake of Allah and passionate adoration, and what are the ways to rid oneself of excessive attachment to a virtuous person if this love exceeds its legitimate Islamic bounds?

Love for the sake of Allah occurs when those who share it gather upon obedience to Allah. If one of them were to commit an act of disobedience, his companion would feel alienated and estranged from him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No two men who loved each other for the sake of Allah are separated except by a sin committed by one of them." As for blameworthy passionate love ('ishq), it has signs, including: the lover seeing only the good qualities of his beloved without their faults, his inability to bear separation from them, and his prioritizing the beloved's satisfaction over that of others, even over the satisfaction of Allah the Almighty. As Ibn al-Qayyim said: "The sign of this polytheistic, disbelieving passionate love is that the lover prioritizes the satisfaction of his beloved over the satisfaction of his Lord." Another sign of it is intense jealousy over the beloved. Therefore, one should monitor oneself and adhere to moderation.
