What is the definition of a soothsayer, and what is the ruling on visiting him, and does communicating with him electronically count as "going to him"?

It is forbidden to go to fortune-tellers and question them, whether this going is in person or through modern communication means, and this is considered a major sin. As for believing them in what they say, it is an act of disbelief in what was revealed to Muhammad, because no one knows the unseen except Allah. Muslim narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about anything, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights." In another narration: "Whoever goes to a soothsayer or a fortune-teller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad." A fortune-teller is anyone who infers the unseen through premises they use, such as a soothsayer and an astrologer. It is permissible to communicate with them for the purpose of advising them and condemning their actions, as this is a prescribed and commanded act.
