Is it obligatory to name a newborn boy "Ahmad" because of a dream the wife saw, or is it permissible to give him any other name?

It is not obligatory to name the child Ahmad, because obligation is a legal ruling that cannot be derived from dreams. However, it is preferable to name him so because of the dream the questioner had, and because it is the name of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. If he wishes to name him with a name other than this, there is no harm.
