Is it permissible to keep one's wife under one's marital authority ( عصمة ), not cohabit with her, and leave her with her family, while covering her expenses and those of her child, with the intention of safeguarding her reputation, given that the husband is aware of her repeated infidelity?

A woman is permitted to waive some of her rights concerning maintenance (nafaqah (definition)) or conjugal relations in order to avoid divorce. However, she retains the right to retract her waiver and demand her full rights. The husband should keep his wife and treat her kindly if her repentance is sincere. If she does not repent, and he fears she will persist in her forbidden acts, then separation is obligatory, either through divorce (talaq (definition)) or annulment (khul'), because her remaining under his marital bond while he refraining from conjugal relations with her could be a temptation for her. In the event of divorce, the wife returns to her family, and the husband is responsible for the maintenance and housing of his child. He is also responsible for the rent of the custodian's lodging if she does not have a residence. If a dispute arises regarding custody, maintenance, or housing, the Sharia (definition) court is the authority to be consulted.
