How sound is the opinion that divorce occurs with a metaphorical utterance, without intention, if issued in a state of anger, and must it be adopted?

The preponderant view is that ambiguous divorce expressions (kinayat al-talaq) do not result in divorce without intention. This applies whether one is in a state of anger or if the wife is asking for divorce. A Muslim is not obligated to adopt this view; rather, what is obligatory is to act upon what one feels confident aligns with the truth, and one is not bound to follow a specific madhhab.
