Is it permissible to work in a mixed-gender volunteer team—men and women—if the meetings and work adhere to the strictures of Sharia, knowing that this team benefits the female student academically and socially, and this benefit cannot be found elsewhere?

Groups where unlawful mixing (where there is no distinction between men and women and no observance of شرعية [religious] boundaries) is prevalent are among the greatest causes of فتنة [temptation/strife] and corruption. It is not permissible to continue in such a place unless there is a genuine need for these courses, and they are not available in a place free from شرعية [religious] prohibitions and where فتنة [temptation/strife] is safeguarded against. In such a case, it is permissible only to the extent of the need.
