What is the ruling on a wife cohabiting with a husband who is negligent in performing prayers and delays his ritual bath (ghusl) from major impurity (janabah), leading to the missing of many prayers? And what is the wife's duty towards him?
We ask Allah to guide your husband and make him steadfast in prayer. Abandoning prayer is one of the gravest major sins, destructive to one's religion, and nullifies good deeds. It is the first thing a servant will be questioned about on the Day of Resurrection. The Qur'an warns those who abandon it. Allah Almighty says: "So woe to those who pray, [but] who are heedless of their prayer" (Quran 107:4-5), and He says: "Then succeeded them a generation who neglected prayers and pursued lusts; so they shall soon meet perdition; Except those who repent" (Quran 19:59-60). Every Muslim must fear this warning and hasten to establish prayer before it is too late. As for you, you must advise your husband and present him with religious tapes. If he repents, then praise your Lord. If he persists, then have someone influential speak to him. Otherwise, we believe you should seek a divorce, and be confident that Allah will compensate you with someone better than him. Before that, it is obligatory for you to obey him in what is good and lawful, and that includes obeying him in bed.
