Does one divorce or two occur if a man says to his wife in a single sitting: "If you do such and such, you are divorced, and if you do such and such, you are divorced," and both actions occur, and he intended thereby to effect a divorce?

The majority of jurists hold that a conditional divorce takes effect upon the fulfillment of the condition it is contingent upon. If a man makes his wife's divorce contingent on multiple conditions, such as saying, "If you enter the house, you are divorced, and if you leave, you are divorced," then the divorce takes effect with the occurrence of these multiple conditions, provided the wife fulfills all of them while still under his marital bond.

However, if the husband did not intend divorce but rather intended a threat, then an expiation for a broken oath (kaffarat yamin) is incumbent upon him, and the divorce does not take effect. He may reconcile with his wife before her waiting period (iddah) ends, provided the total number of divorces has not reached three.
