Does a divorce take effect if the husband says: "If you do such and such, or if you do not do such and such, then you are divorced," and repeats that 4 or 5 times, and do you become unlawful to him?

The preponderant view, in our opinion, is that a conditional divorce takes effect upon the fulfillment of the condition, whether the husband intended to bring about the divorce, or merely to threaten, or to emphasize. Accordingly, if the wife does what the husband conditioned the divorce upon her doing, or refrains from what he conditioned the divorce upon her refraining from, then the divorce has taken effect. If this occurs three times, a major, irrevocable divorce (baynunah kubra) ensues. It is advisable to present the matter to trustworthy scholars in your country.
