What is the ruling on an oath of divorce by an unmarried person concerning a permissible act or a sinful act?

This type of vow does not involve an act of worship or obedience to Allah Almighty, so it entails nothing and its fulfillment is not obligatory, based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him. And whoever vows to disobey Him, let him not disobey Him." A vow that is not an act of worship is not considered valid by the majority of scholars. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered the man who vowed to stand and not sit, not seek shade, not speak, and to fast, to speak, seek shade, sit, and only complete his fast, and he did not order him to pay an expiation, as Malik mentioned in Al-Muwatta'. And he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no vow except in that which the Face of Allah is sought thereby." As for divorcing someone before marriage, it holds no weight, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There is no divorce before marriage." Therefore, this person's vow entails nothing, and he must cease the disobedience.
