The answer

1. Debts are deducted from the Zakatable wealth if they consume it entirely or reduce it below the nisab. If a nisab remains after deducting the debts, then zakat becomes obligatory. If there are surplus assets beyond one's needs (non-Zakatable), such as a car or a house, they can be used to offset the debt, thereby preserving the Zakatable wealth and allowing its zakat to be paid.

2. Circulating currencies are subject to zakat if they reach the nisab and a full year passes over them, whether they are for trade or for hobby. As for abolished currencies, zakat is due on them if they were gold or silver and reached their nisab and a year passed over them. If they are not gold or silver, then there is no zakat on them unless they were prepared for sale and their value reached the nisab.

3. The zakat year begins when the amount reaches the nisab (equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver). If it falls below the nisab during the year, there is no zakat on it. The amount that must be paid is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%).
