What is the meaning of "he conceals himself from his urine," and what is the required limit?

The meaning of istitar (concealment/protection) from urine is to guard oneself and abstain from it, as stated in the noble prophetic hadith (definition) narrated by Abu Dawud from Ibn Abbas, where it is mentioned that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said about one of those being punished in his grave: "As for this one, he did not protect himself from urine." Scholars have explained this to mean that he did not guard himself against urine nor did he take precautions from it. As for the required extent for istinja (definition)’ (cleaning oneself) from urine and other impurities, it has been previously clarified in earlier fatwas. In matters other than istinja’, urine must be removed from the body, clothing, and place when intending to pray, whether it is little or much. It is disliked for a Muslim to be covered in impurity without necessity.
