The question

What is the authenticity of the narrations mentioned in some books of Tafsir – such as Al-Tabari and Al-Qurtubi – that speak of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, marrying Zaynab bint Jahsh, and mention that he fell in love with her when he saw her unveiled in her home and was captivated by her beauty?

The answer

These narrations are not authentic. The Imams and exegetes have denied their authenticity and absolved the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from anything unfitting for his noble status. Several interpretations have been reported regarding the meaning of His, the Almighty’s, saying: "And you conceal within yourself that which Allah is to reveal." Among them are that what he concealed was that Zaynab would be his wife, or his preference for her divorce, or that if Zayd divorced her, he would marry her.
