Should the son pay rent to his father, or is it more fitting and appropriate for him to give the money to his mother for the purpose of drawing closer to God, taking into account that the father believes it is his right to take rent in exchange for building the apartment for his son?

The rights of parents are great, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No child can repay his parent, unless he finds him enslaved, buys him, and then frees him."

Among their rights upon the child is to provide for them financially when needed. The father does not have the right to demand from his son what he spent on him in his childhood, but he does have the right to demand from him the rent for the apartment he gave him to live in.

The child should treat his parents kindly and give them what he can, without making them feel that he is giving them charity. He should not harm them by word or deed, for Allah Almighty says: "So do not say to them [anything that indicates] disapproval and do not reprimand them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was small.'"

Therefore, honoring one's parents is one of the greatest causes of Allah's pleasure and entry into Paradise, for he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Lord's pleasure is in the parent's pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure is in the parent's displeasure," and he also said: "The parent is the middle door of Paradise; so if you wish, lose this door, or preserve it."
