Is it impermissible, according to the Shafi'is, to shave one's hair outside the Hajj seasons?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The later Shafi'is consider shaving the beard مکروه (reprehensible), whether during rituals (نسك) or otherwise. This is contrary to what Ibn al-Rif'ah transmitted from al-Shafi'i in "Al-Umm," namely, that he explicitly stated its prohibition. The same view was held by al-Halimi and al-Qaffal al-Shashi. Al-Adhra'i held the view that shaving it is absolutely forbidden unless there is a valid reason.
