What is the ruling on shaving the entire head and leaving the front part longer than the rest?

Shaving the head is of four types:

- The first: Shaving it for Hajj and Umrah, which is legislated and established by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.

- The second: Shaving it out of necessity, such as for medical treatment, which is permissible by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly consensus.

- The third: Shaving it as an act of worship, religious devotion, or asceticism, without Hajj or Umrah, or making it a distinctive mark, which is an innovation and a characteristic of the Khawarij.

- The fourth: Shaving it outside of pilgrimage rituals, not as an act of worship nor out of necessity, which is permissible according to Abu Hanifa and Al-Shafi’i, and this is the preferred view. It is disliked by Malik.

- As for shaving part of the head and leaving part of it (al-qaza’), it is disliked and prohibited.
