What is the ruling on a father who abandons his wife and children without financial support, and lives secretly below their house to evade supporting them, while he is capable of doing so? And how can the children honor him while he avoids them and does not support them?

A man must financially support his poor or disabled wife and children. His refusal to do so, while being able, is a grave sin. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "It is sufficient sin for a man to neglect those whom he is responsible to support," and "It is sufficient sin for a man to withhold from those whose sustenance he possesses." The wife has the right to take the matter to court to compel her husband to provide maintenance, and she may seek annulment of the marriage if she is unable to obtain her maintenance. As for the children, whoever among them is self-sufficient through wealth or earnings is not entitled to maintenance, but whoever is without wealth or earnings is entitled to maintenance from his father. It is permissible for children to resent their father for his injustice, but it is not permissible for them to boycott him or treat him badly; rather, they must visit him and check on his well-being.
