What is the ruling on men playing the tambourine (duff) in the Maliki school of thought?

The well-known opinion in the Maliki school permits the use of the duff (tambourine) for both men and women exclusively at weddings, and not for other occasions. Others, however, believe that this is specific to women, and that men who do so are imitating them. The Malikis have exempted the rental of the duff and other musical instruments for weddings from being considered disliked (makruh). Some scholars have opined that men playing the duff was not known during the time of the Salaf (early Muslims), but rather, those who did so were considered effeminate.
