What is the ruling on a woman shortening her hair out of necessity, such as the difficulty of washing it in cold weather?

It is permissible for women to shorten their hair as needed, but it is not permissible to shorten it to imitate disbelievers, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Nor is it permissible to shorten it to resemble men's hair, due to the narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men."
