A woman is permitted to shorten her hair for adornment to her husband or to alleviate the burden of washing and combing, as long as it does not reach the extent of imitating men or disbelieving women. It has been reported that the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to shorten their hair until it was like a dense mass. If a mother swears to prevent her daughter from doing so, she can expiate her oath.
