What are the preferred, disliked, and forbidden colors in men's and women's clothing?

The basic principle regarding clothing colors is permissibility, except for what the Sharīʿah has prohibited. Texts of Islamic law mention specific colors such as black, white, green, and red.

Black: Permissible for men and women. Wearing it during calamities is an innovation (bidʿah) and an imitation of Christians.

White: Recommended for men and women in life and when shrouding the deceased. It is also recommended for men during the state of iḥrām (pilgrim's garb).

Green: Permissible.

Red: Pure red is prohibited for men, but not for women. The reason for the prohibition may be imitation of disbelievers or women, or for seeking fame, or because it diminishes one's decorum (kharm al-murūʾah). As for red garments that contain another color besides red, they are not forbidden.
