The criterion for imitation (tashabbuh) is that the imitator does something specific to the one being imitated. Whenever something is specific to a particular group, the one who does it is imitating them. However, when the exclusivity of that group regarding what they were unique in ceases, then the one who does it is no longer imitating them. An example is wearing the "burnoose," which was once the attire of monks, but its dislike has since been removed. The six-pointed star, today, has become a symbol of the Jews, so it must be avoided.
