Is Zakat obligatory on both banknotes and trade goods, or on banknotes only?

The nisab (threshold) for Zakat on papers and currencies is equivalent to the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. It is preferable to use the silver nisab because it is lower in value. The obligatory amount of Zakat is a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) after the completion of a hawl (one lunar year). If the goods are for trade, their value is appraised and added to the cash, and all of it is subject to Zakat. However, if they are for personal use, there is no Zakat on them, and Zakat is only due on the cash.
