What is the interpretation and clarification of Fatwa No. 152646 and its relation to the Hadith: "If he went out striving for his young children, then he is in the way of Allah; and if he went out striving for himself to keep himself chaste, then he is in the way of Allah; and if he went out for show and boasting, then he is in the way of Satan"?

Hypocrisy (riya') is specific to acts of worship, and it is a type of shirk (polytheism). As for ordinary worldly actions, they are not subject to the forbidden riya', such as a person beautifying his house to be praised; this is not blameworthy riya'. Seeking status through means other than acts of worship can be permissible, an act of obedience, or blameworthy, depending on the desired purpose. Not every pursuit of status is blameworthy, and its ruling differs from riya' in acts of worship.
