What is the ruling on prayer and purity for someone who suffers from a spinal cord problem that leads to an inability to control urine, gas, and feces? Is it permissible to pray while wearing a urine collection bag or a diaper outside the home? Do missed prayers from many years after the injury have to be made up?

The method of purification for a patient from whom urine exits through an artificial opening is to replace the contaminated bag with a clean one, if possible. Then, he should perform ablution (Wudu') after the prayer time begins and pray. Whatever exits after that does not matter. His ruling is similar to that of a person with urinary incontinence. As for abandoning prayer due to illness, it is not permissible. An accountable person must perform prayer regardless of his condition, and prayer is never waived for him. If he abandoned prayer while being accountable, he must make it up. However, if he does not know whether he was accountable at the time he abandoned the prayer, then he is not required to make it up.
