What is the ruling on working in the field of archaeology, which involves searching for ancient artifacts, excavating graves, and extracting bones from them?

It is not permissible to exhume Muslim graves except for a legitimate Shar'i reason. The search for ancient artifacts is not one of these reasons. Since the work involves exhuming graves that are not permitted to be exhumed, it is therefore forbidden.
